Sword and Honey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The idea of \u200b\u200blife does not figure in Roman law as a legal concept because in the ancient world it was not considered neither sacred nor inviolable. Indeed, its presence would seem limited to a negative instance, the <em>vitae necisque potestas <\/em> (power over life or death), an old custom that goes back to the Roman Republic and that, as long as there was <em>iusta causa <\/em>(i.e., fair cause in the moral sphere), it allowed the father to kill his children to exercise control over the family\u2019s behavior. As far as the law is concerned, says Agamben, \u201clife appears originally in law only as the counterpart of a power that threatens death.\u201d<sup data-fn=\"058e0c1a-cb31-4970-9f66-04806a2364ad\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#058e0c1a-cb31-4970-9f66-04806a2364ad\" id=\"058e0c1a-cb31-4970-9f66-04806a2364ad-link\" target=\"_self\">1<\/a><\/sup> This power of the <em>pater familias<\/em>, which was limited to the patrician families through legal marriage, evinces the original niche of the idea of \u200b\u200bsovereignty within the family and, at the same time, turns it into a terrible place that makes the sons, daughters and the wife the first human victims of exception.<sup data-fn=\"77797e0e-2fbe-4ccc-892d-e0ae09e9afd0\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#77797e0e-2fbe-4ccc-892d-e0ae09e9afd0\" id=\"77797e0e-2fbe-4ccc-892d-e0ae09e9afd0-link\" target=\"_self\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">In her magnificent book <em>Los jardines de Bomarzo<\/em> (The Gardens of Bomarzo), Dutch writer Hella Haasse talks about a Roman custom according to which brides of high birth came to the altar on a snow-white horse and surrounded by relatives and friends of the family; the entourage, however, did not include any other women. This tradition, according to Sanuto the Younger, a Venetian historian of the twelfth century, also dictated that the bride and groom should eat honey together, but<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">while the woman tastes the honey, a drawn sword is kept over her head, so that she understands that her obligations consist above all in taking care of the burdens of the home and respecting the laws of marriage.<sup data-fn=\"1285a446-5861-4fcc-b194-5a598fae1d2c\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#1285a446-5861-4fcc-b194-5a598fae1d2c\" id=\"1285a446-5861-4fcc-b194-5a598fae1d2c-link\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The woman, says Haasse, \u201ccould not enjoy sweet earthly things without a sword hovering over her head\u2026 \u201d<sup data-fn=\"081883a4-b6b7-4c58-a1c0-3dfcd90ef4f0\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#081883a4-b6b7-4c58-a1c0-3dfcd90ef4f0\" id=\"081883a4-b6b7-4c58-a1c0-3dfcd90ef4f0-link\" target=\"_self\">4<\/a><\/sup> Like Egle, Virgil's nayad (<a href=\"https:\/\/locusterribilis.com\/en\/2025\/12\/11\/0-2-locus-amoenus\/\" target=\"_self\">0.2<\/a>), even if they are in a pleasant place, women are always threatened. Of course, the dangers and privations that applied to wives also applied to the daughters. Wives and daughters are <em>banned<\/em>, abandoned. Ban is an old germanic term which, says Agamben, \u201cdesignates both exclusion from the community and the command and insignia of the sovereign.\u201d<sup data-fn=\"e4968cda-8e2e-4135-82ca-abf6b237c3db\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#e4968cda-8e2e-4135-82ca-abf6b237c3db\" id=\"e4968cda-8e2e-4135-82ca-abf6b237c3db-link\" target=\"_self\">5<\/a><\/sup>, that is, it excludes by including and includes by excluding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What does it mean to be abandoned?, asks Carolina San\u00edn,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It means barefoot. Wearing a tiny white dress you can see through. Daughter of man. The last one on the right in a group of men lined up shoulder to shoulder and facing forward. Smaller than all of them. It means very poor.<sup data-fn=\"af6386e7-d484-4d95-ab0d-34284a83f92d\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#af6386e7-d484-4d95-ab0d-34284a83f92d\" id=\"af6386e7-d484-4d95-ab0d-34284a83f92d-link\">6<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The only way out of this regime of exception, reserved for freeborn males, was to eventually become a <em>pater familias<\/em> themselves, thus ensuring the perpetuation of the terrible place in the bosom of the roman family.
